Hey all, I was just wondering what the advantage is in the "smooth" braids like the power pro slick and the suffix 832? Is there a real advantage? If so, what exactly is it?

Roughness of the braid against guides and reel parts. And noise is dramatically less. I have powerpro original on one reel and can't stand it

The smooth braids are more round in shape than the rough braids. The concept of 8 carrier braids versus 4 carrier braids was supposed to make the braid more round & a tighter weave. They were also touted as stronger. The smoother the braid & more roundness helps eliminate spool dig-in, reduces vibration & makes it quieter.

Smooth braid reduces line noise, but they dont cut through vegetation as good as 4 carriers such as PowerPro original. 

If you hate the noise, or fishes very minimal cover, go for the 8 carrier. Apparently they hold knots better too, but i dont know this for sure.

If you punch, flip, pitch or frog in heavy cover, 4 carrier might be better, simply due to the better serration to cut grass and whatnot.
