Need Help With A Jig Setup

Featured Replies

I want to start using jigs this year and don't know what to use them on. I have 2 rod and reel setups that I think I could also use for johs. My first one use for soft plasticsnt that is 6'6" MH with an Abu Garcia Orra 2SX (6.4:1) and I'm planning on getting a rod for top water frogs that is 7'-7'3" and a reel with somewhere around 7.1:1 gear ratio. Which one should work better? Or should I just wait till I have the money and get a seperate jig setup?

My other setups are a 5.4:1 Lew's Super Dury Speed Spool on a 6'9" MH rod I want to use for my treble hook lures and then I have 7.1:1 reel I'm getting rod for thats around 6'6"-7' for spinnerbaits. But from what few things I've read I don't think those would work for jig fishing.

Use your frog rod, it can double as a jig rod

^ yes.....or better yet, get what you think will be the perfect jig rod and throw frogs with it.

If you aren't going to be fishing extremely heavy cover with frogs and jigs or super deep water with heavy jigs 5/8 oz or heavier, a 7MHF with a good tip will work just fine. I do it all the time. However, I have two different set ups for each. I use straight braid for frogs and braid/fluoro leader for jigs. I don't like having to cut the leader off and tie on a frog every time I want to use the frog, so I have two different set ups.

I fish a 7'3 for jigs and frogs. Veritas medium heavy with a revo stx
