My wife and I are leaving the snowy northeast and heading down to FL with out 8 (soon to be 9) year old. The trip is specifically for him, as he's really into nature, fishing. It was originally intended for him to see some gators and learn alot about the habitat they're in. 

 

He is, like me,  really into fishing. I thought it would be cool to take him on a half day fishing trip, either 4 or 6 hours. I've seen both offered on certain sites.

 

Not being from the area, and certainly never fished in the area or taken a guided tour, what are some things you'd take into consideration?  There would be 3 of us. Myself, Son and my wife (who does not fish, but it cool with going out with us.)

 

Any opinions or insight would be greatly appreciated.

I re-read your post. Duh.... you are looking for a guide. Then just what Dwight recommended Capt Shane would be my recommendation also. He is a BR member as well. Drop him a PM and he will steer you in the right direction. As far as time out in the glades 4 to 6 hrs will be more than enough. My son is the roughly same age as your son. At about 6hrs he is showing signs of being tired although he won't admit to it. Lol. Enjoy your trip!!

Check out, Thadeus Regan with gladesbassin. He's a big stick out there and fishes all the major tournaments out there..

Give, Shane a call. One of the better guides, and people around. He gets booked pretty regularly, so you definitely want to call in advance. If for some reason he's booked elsewhere, Steve McDonald is another darn good guide, especially if you want to have an opportunity to catch some Peacocks when you come down.

That said I'm sure Shane is a good guide - I use to see him in big cypress on occasion
