I got rained out today at work and I have satalite so tv wasn't an option so I started playing with my tackle. I came up with the bright idea of painting my old curado. Its coming out alot better than I expected. I'm not finished yet I still have some detailing to do and the clear coat. I plan on putting some sort of  designes like pin striping, decals or something. Has anybody else ever done this or maybe have some ideas. Well heres a pic of it but remember its not finished

A ugly stick of course.(jj) I'm not sure yet im getting into rod building maybe I'll design one around the reel.

That looks really good.  What did you use to paint it?  I would like to hear a follow up after you have fished it for awhile to see how it holds up.

Over on the TT forums there are some guys that do some custom reels, you should check that out.  Some of those are amazing.

I painted a reel to match a rod not too long ago.  I learned a lot from negative reinforcement.

1.  Bearing and other clearances (sideplates, driveshaft, even handle knobs) are fairly tight.  Mask those areas.

2. Paint is fairly thick.  Can be around 0.010" if you aren't careful.

I was amazed at how tight some of the areas of the reel were.  If I were to do it again, I would use Brownell's  Gun-kote or Alumahyde for the black.  I know the Gun-kote is indestructible and applies very thinly.  I would mask off the sideplate edges and not paint the interior of the frame.  I would have removed all of the existing paint.

My reel looked only decent.  And I have already scuffed it up good.  Upon reassembly the whole process went downhill fast.

Yeah I was in on RedlineRoberts breakdown and paint job of a Daiwa® Itö.

I will be real surprised when it's all done, if it goes together right and actually works. As AnthonyRSS stated the tolerances are tight and the reels don't accept painting well, they need to be stripped down to bare or a sealed state.

This isn't the first time I've done this its just the first time I'm doing it right. I'm making sure that all the peices will work proper and fit right. The last time I did this was with cheap spray paint and the reel had no problems functioning. This time I bought the real good paint and I got special caps to spray them with.

Hey d its only about 200 peices it realy ain't that bad. The first time I ever took a reel apart I layed out the peices in order it came off and took pictures as I did it.

Like the colors. It looks pretty tight.

Can't wait to see complete.

Purple and gold.

Beautiful combination.

A little white will give it an elegant  look.

You will catch a lot of fish with this paint combination.

On the other hand, anything green and blue will not catch any fish. Ever.  Never.  You can throw the reel away.

i might anodize a reel of mine scarlet and gray..it will catch way more fish than some purple n gold combo

now OH-bass614 that mans got some taste. scarlet and gray > purple and gold any day
