Cleat Location For Flat Bottom Jon Boat

Featured Replies

I have a 1648 flat bottom Jon boat that I am looking for ideas of where to put a few cleats on it. I would like to see some picture of where anyone has them located throughout the boat. Especially in the front and back. Also, what style cleats are better to use and are the grip one worth getting. The cleats will only be used to tie the boat to the dock. Thank you in advance for any pictures or advice you can provide.

You should have 2 carry handles in the front & an eye. There should be 2 carry handles in the rear as well.

Why do you feel the need for more?

Ditto, you sure you need more ?

Just use a longer rope, or one in the front and back.

I have used the handles to tie off the boat to the dock but it is some what a pain to hang over the boat and tie it off in the rear. The lake I go fishing at has one hook screwed into the dock and it is hard to get my rope tight and keep the boat from moving to far away from the dock.

Mount a rear cleat to on top of the little triangular brace on the transom. As long as you're using the right size rope the zig zag ones do work well.

I'd keep the cleats on the inside of the boat, below the rails if at all possible.  Cleats on top of a deck/rail/gunnel are a no no for me.  They provide snags for fishing line, brush, branches, etc.

Go to the Tracker web page and look at the jon boats.  You can find the 1648 (there are several different models of the 1648).  Click the photos tab and there are pictures of the cleats.
