Sometimes line first.

I don't think about it too much. You need all of them to fish, so they're equally important to me.

I put reel before rod because I fish with a lot of light lines, and a reel with a good drag is important. If you back-reel fish, reel could go last. Line the direct connection to the fish, and is therefore most important. The rod is just the shock absorber and catapult.

I am of the mind set that one's tackle, all your tackle, is a like a big chain; and you're only as strong as the weakest link.

 

When a portion of the chain is miss matched or not operating effectively, I'm changing it to eliminate the problem.

All of them are equally important, I would also add the lure too since you don't want that to fail either

Assuming all of the components are of good quality and good condition.

 

Reel........Need a good performing drag, most of my species can strip out some line.

Rod.........In the last 10 years my rods have ample backbone, cast well.  They do not have to be expensive to meet my

                criteria.

Line.........

Sure a fish can be caught with a drone and the Cuban yoyo (no rod or reel), but that's not the way we fish.

I have always been of the mind set that if I only had say $200 to spend on a combo I would spent $150 on the rod and $50 on the reel. To me the Rod is WAY more important in the way I fish. The only thing between you and the fish is the line so I also use the best line I can afford.
