Drilling Plano Boxes For Drainage?

Featured Replies

Do you guys drill holes in your plano plastic boxes (3600, 3700) to allow drainage for water? If so, how big a hole do you drill? how many? where on the box do you drill them?

Thanks in advance.

I do not - but might not be a bad Idea.

I work pretty hard to keep stuff dry - doesn't always work.

Thanks A-Jay. I always open up my boxes when I get home to let my tackle air dry, but even then i find a little rust now and then. I have also added dessicant packets which seems to help, but doesn't seem to eliminate rust completely

Woul t that just allow the water to get my in easier. But then again the vapor wouldn't be trapped inside.

Good point..I am thinking about drilling holes in the bottom...the bottom of my tacklebag is waterproof...so water coming up from the bottom is not a great concern...but you raise a good point

I'm not sure how small holes would be, but I've had difficulty drilling 1/4" diameter holes in plastic project boxes with a standard drill bit.

I thought about that too...I am worried about cracking the boxes while trying to drill them?

A step drill bit will work for your needs.
Drill a hole from top then drill from bottom to give a clean hole.

An inexpensive step drill bit can be purchased at Harbor Freight.

Plano Hydro-flow is what you want. I've had mine for a couple years and, and I have very little to no rust. like the others I always bring my boxes inside after each trip, turn the fan on, and let them dry for awhile.

Thanks Travis for the suggestion. I currently have roughly 40-50 Flambeau 3700 boxes, and do not wish to replace them. I am thinking if I drill holes in the bottom of them to see if it allows water to drain out and/or evaporate through the bottom?

I throw my lures on the deck and let them dry before I put them back in the box. No moisture problems.

Just find some pics of the Plank Hydroflow on the internet and drill a similar pattern.

I see, well the holes will work. Just make them small, because one of the minor flaws in the hydro flo boxes, is that some hooks make their way through the holes. It only happens once in a blue moon, but it can happen. It seems to be my drop shot hooks. I always add the packets from beef jerky in my boxes too. Not sure if it helps or not, but like I said, I very rarely have rust in my boxes.
