Most Versatile Swimbait Line

Featured Replies

Going to be spooling up a Daiwa Lexa 300 for tossing 8-10" swimbaits. What is an all around good line for topwater, mid depth, and bottom contact swimbaits?

25lb copolymer does the trick for almost all my swimbait needs.

As Bluebasser pens above.

However, to take it to another level, what type of structure will you be encountering down under?

If open water than a copoly or mono can work depending on how deep you want to go.

A fluorocarbon will allow you to go deeper as will lighter test.

A braid may be the best option, with or without a leader.

I would start experimenting this year with different types of lines and tests.

In Virginia we pull swimbaits through grass and then in open water so we need a line that can do both. We also fish along grass lines and over and through stumps so we need a line that will not get damaged easily.

May I suggest checking out your rod's specifications and then stay within that line test and bait size.

You will have a fun time experimenting this year. Just remember to memorialize what happens with each type of line and test so you can go back and read your notes in order to determine which lines and tests are best for the conditions you fish in beautiful Southern California.

Thank you for the insight.  I have actually used straight braid, braid with a leader of 20lb CXX, and Straight 20lb CXX.  I have heard great things about Big Game and may want to try that. But I think for versatility's sake I may want to go with a good copoly.

To answer your question about where I will be fishing, I fish city park lakes with little structure or cover. They probably do not go deeper that 10ft, and the only thing that I would be dragging swimbaits through is submerged vegetation and broken tree branches and some rock.

I would like a line that I can easily walk the dog with Lunker Punker type lures, swimming slow sinking swimbaits, and bottom contact Hudds. Is there a line that you or anyone would suggest that could handle the above mentioned situations? Thanks.

Best line for swimbaits is Izorline XXX co-polymer line !!! I use 20# for baits up to 5 oz. , 25# for baits 5-8 oz.,and 30# for baits up to 13 oz. XXX is very strong, limp and just the right stretch . I used P-line cxx for a bit that line is too brittle and gets kinks in it pretty easy , causing break offs through out your line. Give Izorline XXX a try , you'll love it ...

20-25 Pline CXX or Maxima Ultragreen.  Both are stretchy and have memory but they won't let you down when you hook the one fish that you're fishing for.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I recently placed an order with TW, I got a few more swimbaits and also ordered a spool of 25lb Sunline Defier Armilo. I will give that a try first since its on the way. If I end up not liking it I can try the Izorline or Maxima, I have heard good things about them.

Have fun!  I am sure the Sunline is going to be great!  I trust them for all of my fluorocarbon needs.  Just trust Maxima so I've not tried anything new yet.  Let us know how it performs!

remember that Sunline rates their line a little less than American companies.  25 Armilo is equivalent to about 16 Big Game.
