Monday night I pulled the trigger on a few rods from Rod Geeks.  Awesome colors to start with.  Their High Mod blanks are a little cheaper than Batson and about the same as MHX.  They are basically St Croix blanks built in Mexico.

 

So one of the rods is for a client for his wife's birthday and I'm pushed for time.  They don't yet have rod dimensions online for sizing winding checks so I called them yesterday.  I talked to Bob and he said my rods had already been custom painted, baked, packed, and were on their way to customs.  He stopped what he was doing, went and grabbed a blank, and emailed me the measurements I needed.

 

I have not seen the blanks yet but I am already impressed with the customer service.

So before I went on vacation last week, I receive 2 packages.  One was my blanks about 5 days EARLY and these, a complete color set for free.  I really like these guys so far.

 

Those oranges are intriguing me. Makes me want to do a Browns colored rod. Might have to get into building a custom rod. How much do these normally cost to make if you don't mind me asking?

a 7' MH painted blank will cost from $80 to $120 plus shipping.  Grips, guides and reel seat will cost from $50 on the low end to as much as you want to spend.  I put high end components on all of mine and spend around $100.  Rod builders normally get from $100 to $150 to build it depending on how much bling you want.

From what Scott (SHFishinSticks) told me, they can two-tone paint your blank (front half to the tip one color and back to the butt section another color). How sweet would a half brown - half orange Browns rod look?

My first order is on it's way. You have to fish a rod to know for sure. By comparing specs, the Geeks Blanks are smaller butt diameter and in most cases one size bigger tip (1/64th inch). Wall thickness is a part of the equation but is unknown. Weights seem to be close with the MHX HM .1-.3 oz lighter than C4's but again, with a larger butt dia. They should both fish well. I'm anxous to see.

compared to the same model MHX they feel a little tip heavy.  But I have not fished one yet.

 

I thought the same thing about about the rainshadow blank I just built but I love it.
