Hey reel experts out there a quick question.

 

Last weekend i was ripping grass with Spro Aruku Shad 5/8oz lipless crankbait and  a 7:1:1 gear ratio Basspro PQ reel for about 6 hours. Toward the end of the day I noticed the reel started acting funny once the bait was pulling hard getting close to the boat. Basically it makes a loud noise and it feels like if i Turn the reel handle once theres some tension its almost like it skips over the fact that theres tension and keeps reeling. Does anyone know what im talking about?" Almost like the drag is skipping or something. Its very hard to explain exactly what its doing but thats sort of an idea. Its like if I cant reel anymore because of the tension, the tension breaks and the handle turns anyway.

 

Anyone know what this could be?

First thing that comes mind: Is the line slipping on the spool? You would not be the first to have this happen, especially with braid. Mike with DVT will be along soon with a helping hand. Good luck.

What type of line do you have on the reel?

Im fishing with 12lb yo-zuri hybrid, but there may be braid backing im using, if the braid was tied through the holes of the spool how would it slip?

If you broke it, it is probably fixable.  Send it to DVT and he'll fix it.  It has been a couple of years now, since I sent him a 7 Ball bearing Calcutta that had an annoying click in it since I bought it.  He fixed it and it doesn't have that annoying click and its been a few years now.

 

I have other reels that I need to send to him, but I'm waiting until I get some disposable income that I can allocate to that purpose.  UNtil then, feel free to cut in line and send your reel in.  As I recall, it didn't take very long.

Line is stacked up on one side of the spool and rubbing the frame. Nothing wrong with the reel, just over filled.

I concur. The line level and lay on the spool is the first thing that comes to mind to check. Let us know how you make out.

If tied through a hole in the spool it can't slip. Some just cinch a knot down on the spool. Line will sometimes slip when done this way.

It doesn't have anything to do with slipping on the spool nor does it need to get sent out. Just strip some line off the spool. He's lucky he didn't lose a fish from breaking off.

If you take the teel off the rod, you should be able to see that the line is rubbing on the frame, looking from under the reel.
