What Makes A Good Horizontal Jigging Lake?

Featured Replies

Last year, I posted a thread about missed bites on jig because I wasn't catching anything big from one particular reservoir on jigs, in spite of a whole lot of time I put in, and I was convinced I was missing bites.

Now, I'm not so sure.

I have had a lot of success with *adult* bass on jigs from another reservoir. Granted it's more stained and fishes shallower. But when I set the hook, either on instinct, or because I felt a bite, I'm hooking a fish- usually a good sized one. So detecting bites is probably not the problem.

Maybe the fish in my other reservoir don't prefer jigs? I've tried different skirt materials, different colors, different trailers, different retrieves. Nope, nothing- as far as adult bass are concerned.

*Location* is not the deal there- of that I'm sure. *Timing* might be, but I've put in so much time here over the years, I can probably eliminate that as well.

Thoughts? Tom, Catt, others?

Fish that hold at great depth. Usually clear, deep water.

That's what I've got over there (where I can't catch big fish on jigs).

There's a Lunkerville video, with "Lunkerboss" Marty Friedman vertical jigging a spot I've fished. It's like 50' deep. It shows the technique perfectly even though the show isn't about techniques, lol. Check it out. Marty uses 1.5+ oz jigs, and typical MH bass gear.

Thanks, I will check it out. A little difficult to implement that technique from the bank though!

Yes, but you asked, lol.

deep, I've seen your pictures, noticed your understanding of jig has grown; well you just came to a new understanding.

Despite its pure awesomeness there will be bodies of water where a jig aint your #1 choice!

Try a little experiment; fish that reservoir with Texas Rigged craw worms.

Crap, I read the title as vertical, lol. Need more coffee!

Thank you.

You mean a craw worm without any (spider grub style) skirt, right? Any specific brands you'd recommend?

Thanks!

I never think of them as overlooked, because I use them A LOT, but yeah, creatures seem to get more play.

Ok, let me make sure Im reading this right...I might not be.

So are you saying that the topography of this other reservoir, could be affecting the fish's behavior in a manner that is not conducive to horizontal jigging?

Can't tell for sure what causes it but I know it's jigs in general.

On lakes known for jig bites that'll shutoff for weeks at a time. Not completely but a marked decrease in amout of bites.

Jigs aint the cure all, no lure is ;)
