painting eyes

Featured Replies

What is the best way to get consistant looking eyes? All my eyes look different. Thanks!

I know there are probably better methods but I always used a pencil eraser and it worked well for me. :D

The backs of drill bits. Different sizes for different size lures.   :D   And mine and Marty's way.     :-X

Eric

The head of a nail works well also.

Marty's eyes are always perfect. Is his drill bits? I have about 10 pounds of them in the shop. ;D Thanks again everyone.

Marty and I do not use drill bits. Since you have a few of his just keep studying them. Look closely. Soon you will see the little signs.    Not my secret to give.    :-X  That would be like him telling my line tie placement and height on a deep plug.

I understand. Everyone has a signature mark of some kind and his is the perfect eyes.

Drill bits work well, the trick is to get the right amount of paint on end of the bit.    Wipe the bit off before dotting the next eye.

Hey Cootertom, Go to sign shop and either have them cut you some in different colors and sizes or get some scrap vinyl from them and use hole punchers. You can get different size punchers at a craft or scrapbooking store. Hope this helps and sorry Marty and Eric if I gave it away. Also go to the TU website and search there. Lots of info on this subject there. David

Haven't been thinking that way. Sounds like it would work great as it would be a soft touch if you happened to get to close. I will try it this weekend. Thanks!

David, no more baits for you.   You made it to easy, he would have figured it out.   Cooter, that is how I make my eyes and I got the idea from stick on eyes you can get from Jann's.   I have a source to free vinyl and gave it a try.   If you look close at the edges of the eyes on my baits you where the punch tears the vinyl in places.

Oh no, I really didn't know if that was how Marty done it. I read about it on TU. Lots of info there. Sorry guys. David  :'(

Those little "jaggies" were the little signs I was referring to. I have them on mine too. Free vinyl is good a good thing. It comes in many different colors, but I only use 3 or 4.

Can't make everything too easy. ;D

Marty,

We still got our rattles!!!! :):D :-X LOL

Eric

Yes the magic rattle is still ours but I need another lesson on the line tie :D

Sorry guys! Didn't mean to upset the cart. I was just trying to improve.

I don't think that anyone is upset, and I for one never meant to come across that way. The two post between Marty and myself were the two of us joking around with other. If it came across other than that, I apologize.

Eric

David there are always a few baits laying around for you :D

I've used a pencil eraser, if it's brand new it will make a perfectly round imprint. I test it on a piece of paper to see how much pressure and paint is necessary to make the eye, but I've gotten lazy in my old age or should I say smarter and I've found some eyes at a local tackle shop and they're almost perfect. They're the soft type, I hope they don't break down when putting on the epoxy. The next batch of crankbaits will have the new eyes and we'll see how they look.

I think I might have shared this before but I use a q-tip.  It soaks the paint up so it doesn't drip and you can manipulate the tip a bit once it hits the lure.  You don't have that bubble of paint floating around on the lure until it dries.  Here is an eye I did on a yellow perch pattern.  I really did it out of necessity because I was out of gold stickon eyes.lol  I don't know how the picture will turn out because I cropped it down from a pretty big picture.

you can get little paint brushes from Stamina called eye dotters.   these are foam and work like a q-tip.

I'm new to this site , so hopefully I can add some info for everyone. I suck at hand painting eyes. So what I do is get vinyl electrician's tape, they come in all colors, and I use a hole punch tool that does 10 different sizes, for all my eyes, pupils, gill rakers and kill spots. It works really well, and it is clean and neat.
