Swimjig Rod?

Featured Replies

I have been looking around for a swimjig rod and it seems everyone uses different rods for swimjigs. I can't seem to narrow it down. Does anyone have a swimjig rod they love at a price range or about $100-$150. Also what type of line do you use for swimjigs

NRX 853 with 15 lb. CXX is what I've been swimming with so far this year. You could easily drop to 10 lb. CXX or something else; the extra diameter is there for bite protection. To fit within your price range, I would go with a Loomis E6X 853. It's on the upper end of your range but would be $161.50 with a 15% off sale.

If you want to use braid, I'd recommend a slower action and would point you to the *** Black (wait for the new ones if possible), Daiwa Tatula, Shimano Zodias, or an MBR rod within the E6X series. A lot of folks throw moderate actions for swim jigs and do well, so unfortunately some of this is going to come down to preference.

I just started fishing a swim jig this spring. I'm using a Veitas MH 6'9" with 15# Yozuri hybrid. The shorter length helps throw under docks but I think the 3" over the 6'6" gives it a little more sensitivity to detect the bite on the fall.

Use yer flippin stick.. I use mine for swimjigs

depends on the type of swim jig hook(northern vs california/coosa) and where you will be throwing it (weeds, wood or open water)

Can't go wrong with a 7' MH/F rod. Fits just about every swimjig application pretty well.

Mh fast is standard response.

However I'd make an argument for moderate fast or moderate. The slower action allows the bass cushion to not rip jig out before hook em. A heavy hookset is not required it's almost like a crankbait. This is even more important when using braid.

Also when banging into logs and rocks having a slower action allows the jig to load up on the cover then spring off. A fast or xfast rod will transmit most of that energy into your rod and hands and the jig will bull over it without much loss of momentum.

As for suggestions, I know daiwas fast action is more on the slower side and okuma tcs APC (7' and 6'6") have a little more give than tatulas.

As I said, I'm a "Don't knock it until you try it" guy and I saw why a moderate action works with a chatterbait but with a swim jig it is a no go, at least if you are working it in cover like grass and around wood. I use my pitching rod as it also make an awesome swim jig rod, Fenwick Aetos 7'2" MH-XF, it just works well for me. In that price range you can get a lot of rod, especially if you wait 2 week for Memorial day sales, but honestly a 7' MH-F Quantum Smoke rod, They are updated with the new line indicator but that isn't important, what it is that they still have the same basic build with the same blank as the original Smoke and it is a rod that is under the radar as far as most people are concerned but it is a really good stick for the money.

I use a Daiwa Tatula 7' 2" MH\R rod for my swim jigs. I fish light to heavy grass and a lot of standing timber and have no problem working the jig thru the cover.

I use either 10lbs flurocarbon or 40lbs braid, depending on the lake.

I would say most people use a MH/F 6'6"-7' I myself am a fan of the moderate action with everything if possible. That being said I fish lots of grass and use whatever rod I need to. Swimjigs, swimbaits, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, blah, bablah, bablah. It's all the same. I use 12# CXX a lot but 10-15 is just fine for anything.
