On Board Battery Charger

Featured Replies

After about 15 years of usage, my Guest battery charger died.  I know that the technology has changed a lot since I bought that one.  I'm wondering what chargers you guys like and why.

Thanks,

Chris

First thing I would think based on your experience is another Guest. I currently use Dual Pro but have used Pro Mariner and Minn Kota and have no complaints about any of them. I believe Dual Pro makes the only serviceable unit. All the other brands make good anchors when they break

Been using a ProMariner 3 bank for 10 years in my Lund. If the Guest gave you good service, get another. I'd get another ProMariner if mine failed, based on my experiwnce.

My rig is a '98.  It came with a DualPro 3-bank charger installed.  That DualPro is still going strong this minute.  As long as I've had it, it's only been unplugged when I've been fishing.  For me it's a DualPro all the way.

I swore by Pro Mariner for years, until my last failure. I was running their Pro Tourny 300's until this last one failed. When you get old, time does not seem to mean much so I don't keep track of it, but years ago, I bought one of their new (Made in China) PT-300's, it lasted about a year and died. Sent it in and they sent me a replacement. It lasted about three years and died, sent it in, they said it was not repairable, outdated boards in it. They gave me a small credit for that one against another new one. It lasted about four years and died. I sent it in and same story, it's not repairable because the boards are outdated, but they could allow me a credit against a new one. I asked him if I could get a schematic and just return it. I have a degree in electronics and very good at repairing stuff myself, he said he could not send me a schematic. I then told him once he removed it from where I told him to stick it, he could do what he wanted with it but, I had no need for another one.

Hahah...Way2slow...that's what I've heard about some of the chargers out there.  My Guest was bought from BPS back when BPS carried them.  It has been a good charger, need to do my homework to see if they kept their quality up.  Lost my battery charger and spun a trailer hub all on the same weekend.

Well, I just finished installing the Minn Kota 330D I ordered. It's big and heavy, and I had to do a little changing to make room for it but, I figured for $250 to my door plus a $30 mail in rebate, it was cheap enough, so what the heck, I would give it a try.

Had the 330P not been on factory back order for a while, I would have gotten it. It has the conditioning feature that desulpates the battery. Which I don't let my batteries stay at a state they could sulphate.

I just bought and installed the Minn Kota 210D. Prior to buying this I didn't use an on board charger. I had a Smart Charger that I used, when it broke it was replaced with the 210D.  Minn Kota has rebates now and always had good luck with their products.

Get this and be done with it.

I had one on my Ranger with a bad bank after 6 years, and they gave me credit for core and bought a refurbed one direct from factory with one year warranty and its still running strong.

My recently sold Bullet came with a ProMariner, it was dead within a month, Pro Mariner replaced it and the new one died about 1 year later after giving it to my father-in-law.  Brother-in-law has a Guest and so far so good.

Ended up going with the BPS charger that puts out 5 amps per 3 banks.  From what I can tell, looks like it's made by pro mariner.  Hopefully it ends up being a good charger.  Not a 10 amp per bank like my Guest was but it is supposed to recondition the batteries for longer life.

It depends if you have glass mat batteries or standard flooded cell deep cycles.  They can utilize different float chargers.
