I recently made the switch from left-handed retrieve to right-handed and its not going so well haha I've always used left-handed because it felt more natural and because of a wrist injury that made it somewhat painful to control the rod with my left hand. The transition isnt going as smoothly as projected. Any suggestions or tips?

If the left hand reeling feels more natural and you have an injury that bothers you doing it the opposite way, then why change it up?

my advice: go back to left handed retrieve. I write with my right hand and retrieve with my left. No matter how much I practice, I will never write as well with my left hand, and I have a feeling the same goes for the manipulation of a baitcaster.

found a reel I reely liked (see what i did there  ) but they didnt have the gear ratio I wanted in a left hand retrieve so I said f it and bought the right handed

Lol well that's a good reason to learn how to do it the other way.  I don't think I could make the switch. It feels too unnatural to reel with my left hand. Even with spinning gear.

I know what you mean. bought it yesterday, took it out today and felt like I was in second grade all over again trying to learn to write cursive.....very painful to watch lol

It was pretty bad for the first week or so. I kept dropping food and spilling my drinks. I looked odd trying to write in school because I can't write with my left hand. I was getting annoyed. Lol

Hand switcher here for both Spin and BC.  Cast right hand, switch hands, reel right hand.  Don't even think about it.  Tried reeling with left hand on spinning gear...couldn't do it.

Just do it.  I have both and hardly notice when I pick up one or the other.  Fights fatigue and repetitive movement disorder, whatever that is.

To me it seems a lefty is a natural born fisherman mechanics-wise. No need to change hands during that crucial initial fall time.

I use the right hand retrieve for baitcasters and left hand retrieve for spinning reels. Tried a left hand retrieve baitcaster earlier this summer, gave it to my son. I believe it's how you grew up learning it. Even tried to move the knob on spinning reel for right hand retrieve and put it back within a few casts. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Gittin' a bit off topic here, but I don't think much is required in school anymore regardless of the state.....so OP, keep the reel.  No one will notice and if they do it wouldn't be politically correct to say anything anyway for fear of hurting your feelings (or more likely the sensitivity of someone else standing nearby).

its funny you say that cause I've lived in MD my whole life...I hear they aren't making kids parallel park for their drivers license anymore either..wth is happening 

I worried about doing it "right" for about 10 seconds when I started fishing seriously and then I realized that I didn't give a crap about doing it "right" and now I do it the way I'm most comfortable.  If you enjoy what you're doing and you're catching fish, nothing else matters

If you are young to the sport you can probably work into the transfer. If you are an established fisherman I would not as I believe it will dilute your concentration over an extended period of time.
