Beginner Fishing Rod Advice And Help

Featured Replies

Hi, I have the following rod and reel combinations for bass fishing. This is my second year of bass fishing and need a little bit of help/advice.

Can someone let me know what each of these combos would excel at?

Are any of these combos repetitive?

What would you add or upgrade?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

7'1" *** *** black casting rod mh xf with a 6.8:1 lews lfs speed spool.

6'6" St. Croix triumph casting rod mf with a 7.1:1 daiwa lexa.

7'4" quantum kvd tour spinning rod mf with a daiwa legalis 6.2:1 spinning reel.

7' abu garcia vendetta spinning rod with a 2500 shimano sonora.

I think the first thing that I would like to upgrade is the sonora. I have power pro braid on the baitcasters and 8lb mono on the spinning reels.

I like to carry four rods max bc I primarily fish out of a kayak. I would like to have more of a variety. To me, all of my current rods feel like they do the same tasks. Would you guys recommend a moderate action rod? I fish throughout the mid atlantic for bass.

Power = m mh h xh

Action = mod f xf

A mh casting rod is a do all type of rod. Most like a fast or xf action.

A moderate action is good for treble hook baits. However there's a mod/fast action and some people like that for certain things. There is also no set standard to rating a fishing rod. I have heavys that are like a mh and I have a ml that's like a medium. Same with the action too.

If I'm taking 1 rod it's a mh/f with a 6x1 reel.

I can throw anything on it that I want.

Spinnerbait

Buzzbait

Spook

Senkos

Crankbaits

Poppers

Jigs

Ect

You pretty much have it covered with those 4.

I don't think any of those rods you listed are moderate rated. If you throw crankbaits, in-line spinners, & lip-less crankbaits you definitely want to invest in a moderate rod for those treble hook baits, along with a lower ratio reel (5:4.1 or 26 IPT or less). Other than that you have a nice arsenal of combos that cover most of the applications! Check out Pflueger's line of spinning reels if you want to upgrade that Sonora. I'm very happy with their spinning reels (President, Supreme, & XT's). My preference :) Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses so far guys! I was thinking about a moderate rod. I need to learn how to use hard baits or at least gain more confidence. I get frustrated with weeds lol.

I do pretty well with very small crank baits like the rebel craw. Am i better off throwing the ultralight sized crankbaits on a spinning rod?

Is it typically better to pay for sensitivity on spinning rods as opposed to casting and cranking rods? I wonder this bc it seems like the cranking rods are often used for reaction baits where you don't necessarily need to feel a bite as much. It seems like I would be better off buying an inexpensive moderate rod and spending more of my money on a rod that I use for deadsticking plastics and fishing hair jigs when the water is in the 40's. Is this logical?
