Baitcasting Reel Crank Shaft Won't Turn Main Drive Gear.

Featured Replies

Does anyone know why this is happening? The crankshaft is not turning the main drive gear which then doesn't touch the pinion gear and then the spool doesn't turn. Just the levelwind turns. Any suggestions?

what reel?

have you taken it apart recently? did you try to pop the handle side plate off and make sure the pinion is seated properly? the chasis that holds the pinion has to sit the correct way on those two posts /w the springs on top of them to correctly mesh /w the main gear thought even it was seated improperly it should still get some sort of contact /w the main gear.  Is your drag too loose? generic question but if your drag is really loose the line guide will move but the gears won't engage to turn the spool. same goes for the cast control knob on the handle side under the drag star. make sure it isn't really loose.

Yes I have taken it all apart... The pinion yoke is seated properly and so is the pinion gear itself

Ok got the crankshaft to spin the spool but now when I reel it's very slow and tight and rough and the drag isn't working as much as I tighten it if I pull the line still right off the spool

did you put the drag spacers back correctly? They should look like this (). Sounds like you may have over greased the drag stack. These are touchy and don't require much to operate correct.

if you took it back apart and now the main gear is rotating the spool but the retrieve is rough, you most likely put something back incorrectly. It's hard to say without having the reel in front of me.

Ok thanks I'll have another look at it and get back to you thank you!

Ok got the drag stack right and it works now but now the only problem is how rough the spool is turning it's like it's hard to turn. Any suggestions?

is your cast control knob tightened all the way? that would make the spool more difficult to turn,

No I wish it was a simple thing like THAT LOL

What do you mean by hard to reel?

if you removed the drive shaft when taking it apart, there's either a bushing or bearing underneath it. Did you possibly add the wrong size spacer or get something under the bearing or bushing? That would cause the reel to be feel like there is "pressure" under load.

are any of the washers scarred up from being put together wrong before?

What I mean by rough to turn is that the spool is turning really slow and roughly when I put it back together... And now I just took it apart again now the drag doesn't work again. I just don't understand it. And yes there is a bearing under the crankshaft but it's seated correctly and everything and no no washers are scarred up or anything... Thinking the drag configuration is wrong. Does anyone have a picture of what it's supposed to look like before you put the drag star on?

As far as what the drag configuration looks like, it most likely is a small circle thin washer that sits on top of the AR bearing over the cranking shaft followed by 2 concave washers that have to be seated correctly in the () position. No idea if the speed spool has a click drag or not but if it does, then put the clicking drag plate on. Spin the drag star back on.

The bearing being seated correctly or not isn't what to look for there. It will seat itself correctly when you screw the gear back down. Make sure UNDER the bearing, between the frame and bearing, you don't have too thick of a washer/the incorrect washer or something in there that shouldn't be.

I know the feeling that you are describing about the spool being difficult to rotate. 9 times out of 10 it's put back together incorrectly.

That's why it's always important to set things out in order and label them in what order they go on, AND have the reel specs. Have learned this the hard way, but thankfully have been able to put the reels back together.

Ok got the concave washer order and everything and drag works fine now but still can't get the roughness out it barely reels in its hard to crank. Here's a pic of the reel anything I did wrong?

It seems as though when I tighten the drag more the reel becomes harder and harder to reel in.
