Lake Pyramid California - Little Help?

Featured Replies

Can anyone give me any advice about bank fishing Lake Pyramid California?  Perhaps off the beaten path since I'm not afraid of a hike and top three must have lures/plastics.

I'm picking up a lake map this afternoon to review the structure.

I've been shutout at Lake Casitas since late April and Pyramid is the same distance from home.

Thanks.

Pyramid isn't a good shore fishing lake, limited where you can go.

Try stopping by Fishing Fools tackle in Granada Hills and talk to Jim, he knows the lake.

I can help you with Casitas, it has more shoreline access than Pyramid.

Another choice is Castaic lower lagoon and upper lake.

What type of tackle and lures do you use?

Dang WRB...I was just at Fishing Fools an hour ago getting a map.  I'm going to study both Pyramid and Castaic (since they are on the same map).  How is Castaic as far as visibility and structure?

I have a spinning rig I use for finesse and casting rig for SB, jigs and crank.  I carry a wide variety of soft plastics from Senko, craws, Flukes and so on.

I have methodically worked the shores of Casitas with everything in my box over the last months from Deep Cat to the old boat ramp cove.  The water is so low and muddy with visibility 6" or less and I'd say is down to 35 percent.  Very little structure at least from the allowed shore fishing to speak of as well.

I have spent my whole life passing Castaic traveling up the 5 but sadly have never even seen the lake.  I'm game however...will you recommend a starting point?

I fish at pyramid a lot and I like the lake a lot. Half of the lake is accessible to bank fishermen. To access other areas of the lake, you have to go on the trails and explore. These trails will exhaust you very quickly with lots of incline and decline hill. I mostly drop shot at this lake and sometimes throw a few reaction lures with luck.

Thanks via.  All my gear is in a backpack and my rods strap conveniently to the sides.  So I don't mind hiking to get there.

Pyramid you need to watch out for rattle snakes if walking trails.

The good thing about Pyramid is smallmouth bass, NLMB & FLMB and stripers.

The marina areas get restocked by bass boat anglers, so they always have some bass around, plus the docks.

The marina arm at Pyramid is your best bet from shore.

If you are just looking to catch bass and not concerned with targeting big bass with your pack rods, my suggestion is using a slip shot rig from shore with 4 1/2" to 6" Roboworms in Bait Ball, Oxblood w/red flake and MMII. Also lightning Shad 3" or 4" hand poured Sluggo's type for drop shot at all the local lakes.

You need 6# or 7# FC ( Sunline Super Sniper is good).

Slip shot rig; 1/8 to 3/16 oz mojo cylinder weight, Carolina Keeper, Owner #5133 size 1& 1/0 hook, weedless-skin hooked for worms.

Ghost Shad Splash-It surface popper retrieved like a frightened Shad. (Don Iovino)

Yo-Zuri 3D silver w/black back lipless crank bait.

Fish the above using 8# premium line, your choice.

That's it.

Thanks WRB for all the info.  Are you talking about the Basstrix or Lunker city product in "lightning shad" color?

We have 2 local tackle shops that have lightning Shad hand poured Sluggo types, Action Tackle and Fishing Fools.

Uptons Customs also makes a lightning Shad 4" Sluggo and purple thunder both a good.

Basstrix makes a Flashtrix hollow body minnow that's good on Shad colors.

Thanks WRB!!  I'll be in the neighborhood of Fishing Fools this afternoon and will stop in.

Perhaps one day we'll bump into one another at Casitas or Castaic.

Action Tackle is at Sepulveda & Chatswoth, only a few miles from Fishing Fools, they have Preferred Plastics in blue lightning Shad 5" spade tail or Bultler style straight worm that works.

Say hi to Jim for me at Fishing Fools.
