How Do You Clean Reel Handles, Daiwa Tatula

Featured Replies

Went out this morning with my brand new tatula. First time on the water and it is an awesome reel. Unfortunately i got a little grit on one of the handle knobs. It gummed up a bit and i was wondering how to get this part clean. Do the knobs come off the handles or will i have to clean them while attached? Thanks

The knobs do come off. Pull out on the knob cap with something. Then it'll expose a screw. If you're just talking about getting the knobs dirty. Just scrub them off with a rag, and dawn.

....or a toothbrush.  Probably no need to pull them off.

Magic eraser or simple green/toothbrush. Leave them on the handle

Thanks for the info. The part i was worried about was the actual bushings. There was a gritty feeling when the knob was turned. I played with it some more and it looks like daiwa packed a ton of grease into this bushing, lots of gray grease comming out and the gritty feeling went away. Another question, when the time comes to clean this part, should i use grease or oil? I always use oil so its weird to me that they use grease from the factory.

I use a heavy oil. Like 140wt gear lube for differentials in trucks. I use it for frame bearings, worm gear bearings and the worm gear. Grease will work, but I just feel it doesn't actually get down into the bearings. I use brake cleaner to spray out the bearings. It works quick, and dries fast.
