River Fishing Frogs

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any success throwing a frog in the river? I am thinking about trying it out I have never tried it. Will I be wasting my time or will I find a hidden treasure?

I don't see any reason why a frog would not work. Throw it where there is little to no current in creeks, you will probably catch a few. Good Luck!

Should work in a river.

frogs are a mainstay on the mississippi river. they work and they work well. find some grass with a little current but not a lot or shaded cover when the suns high!

I've tried it, but it mostly depends on the current flow. If the water's fast I'll throw it in the eddies, maybe one will pluck it there. Otherwise if the water's fast, it's tough to fish them.

like preytorien said, it all depends on how fast the water is moving...If its more of a calm river, I don't see why not, if it is a rough river, you might run into a few issues

It depends on the river, on the river I fish, a buzz frog or other toad type bait works well as it is more of a buzzbait. Hollow frogs work well in certain areas, and the areas they produce are sections of slower moving water.  I find that on my river, wake baits, spooks, and poppers work better but I have used frogs in certain areas where there is a lot of eel grass and water willow.

Good luck and tight lines!!

I caught 2 smallies on a river the other day with a hollow body frog.  They were the biggest of the day also.

all the time for both small and largemouth , current would be the only determining factor
