Line For Pflueger President And Trion Spinning Reel\rod

Featured Replies

Hi every one, went to Walmart to pick up some tackle and an Inexpensive rod for my GF,Drove a lil further to a store that has a lil more fishing gear than the one one near me, pretty much was set on getting her a Shakespeare cirrus combo, I've had a few in the past, they work pretty good, are sensitive, and look good, I misplaced my first one, broke the second and third. they are usually around $30, was on rollback at the store for $25.

But ended up findind an clearance deal on a Pflueger president and a Trion combos, both were marked down with the crank handles taped to the fore grip, The President has a sticker that reads $19.74 when I first saw it and grabbed it, I i thought, this is a $45 reel! so as long as that works good, its worth it, Screwed the arm in and works great, rod looks good and feels good too. the Trion had a Red Bar code sticker with no price on it, price checked at $19.88, Screwed the arm in, and that one works great too, Im thinking that the arms screwed off and the maybe they thought it was broken or something, or possibly they where returned items, either way I got a sweet deal I think.

Any way, Not im thinking that 50# braid and 12#fluoro (left over from my baitcasters) might be a lil much for these rods, I also have a Spool of 12#mono, Im thinking maybe some 10# mono or Fluoro might work better, the rods will be used for shore fishing mostly using soft plastics as well as used to go after panfish when the bass arent biting.

So i could get some 8# or 10#  fluoro  since they had some for spiderwire ez fluoro on rollback, or maybe pick up some 6# yozuri Hybrid, or just get some cheap #8 or 10# mono.

thanks for your help guys!

Congratulations on the excellent finds.  Softer line works better on spinning reels.  I would go with Trilene XL or Suffix Elite.....10# max unless those reels a big ones.  No experience with the 2 lines you mentioned.  Fluoro can be a bit stiff.  Yo-Zuri Hybrid is highly thought of on this site.  It often gets bragged about how strong the line is for its listed strength.  Normally that translates to a larger diameter line in order to get that extra strength.  Of course, you could get a smaller diameter line by dropping down to a lighter line that actually breaks at 8-10 pounds.  :teeth3:

I really like the new Berkley Iron Silk

I forgot to mention the reel is a 6935, it claims 155yds at #10 mono.

I did read that Yozuri Hybrid is stronger and thicker for the rating , so maybe a 6# line from them might work better, but is it really worth the extra $8 over trilene big game or maybe even the $13 over zebco omniflex?

Zero experience with any Zebco line, and have read nothing about Omniflex.  Have never used Yo-Zuri.  Therefore I can't say if it is worth $8 more than Big Game.  I use 8# and 12# Big Game on casting reels.  Good line.  Kind of doubt the Yo-Zuri would be worth $8 more to me.  However, Big Game would not be my first choice...or 2nd or 3rd....for a spinning reel.

Like I said, softer lines are better on spinning reels.  Less memory problems....memory being why a lot of people prefer a light braid on spinning reels.  I use both lines I mentioned in my previous thread.  I have Sufix Elite 8# on a couple spinning reels.   Used XL for many years from pre-teenage years into 40's.  Still use some, but I like to try different lines.....just because.  :teeth:

Sunline Super Natural is another line I use on casting reels, and I think it would do pretty good on a spinning reel as well.  Currently am trying 12# AN40 on a couple casting reels.  Also have some 6# and 8# to try.  So far I like it.  AN40 might be another low cost option for you.  I have Shakespeare Red Cast on 3-4 reels (casting) and have had zero problems with it.  Memory is low.  Also use Shakespeare Cajun Advantage which might be slightly better on a spinning reel.

There are plenty of reasonably priced options.  I'd give the Omniflex a try considering its low cost.  If it didn't work out, you would be out very little money.  If it works good for you, then you saved money.  Who doesn't like to save money?  :teeth:
