Spawning Bass

Featured Replies

I know theres no exact period of time but how long do their tails take to heal up? And do both male and females tails get beat up?

Yes and no. Bass can rejuvenate tail tissue if the wound doesn't get infected with desease and the water purity is good.

Yes and no?? Meaning some of each sex tails get beat from fanning beds but not all of both sex that r mature enough to spawn???

Both genders can receive tail damage from spawning.  However, not all bass that spawn get physical injuries.  About the only thing both male and female bass experience is weight loss.  Other physical factors vary greatly for each individual fish and their health before entering the spawn.  Also keep in mind that not all bass spawn at once.  I'm in Southeast Virginia and we have fish on the beds at the beginning of April every year.  We also have bedding bass, albeit not nearly as many, at the beginning of June.

Yep yep i knew all that except for the tails and sexes, id always been told just the girls get beat up tails wich kinda made sense since the biggest fish ive caught during and after the spawn had tore up tails and the females are the biggest but wasnt sure, bass here start bedding in early april normally too and the last spawners are usually done late may to about the first week of june, all these were caught in the last two weeks off beds..jave more but to big to upload..

Uhh the male builds the nest which results in their tail getting beat up.

The female fans a nest to keep silt from building up.

The male bass selects and makes the bed site, the female may or may not do some house cleaning of the bed site.

I have caught a lot of big female bass over the years, some have perfect tails and others have severely damaged tails. Yes and no met just that; some bass heal and rejuvenate tail tissue, some don't due to desease.

When a female lays it's eggs, they roll to one side and deposited eggs while kicking their tail against the bed bottom, that is what causes most female bass tail damage, egg laying not nest making. I have watch several big females laying eggs into the same nest site, none of those bass stayed around after they were done. The female may hang around nearby if they have more eggs to lay, when they are done they leave nest guarding to the male bass.

I've seen mails bite the females in the tail.  I suspect it's after the deed is complete, some males are more aggressive than others.

If a simple yes or no will suffice then y'all have an answer but if y'all want to know how long then it'll take some esplaining.

The guys get beat up also. Keep in mind they are the ones to first clear out the bed for the females.
