Best Spinning Reel Size For Drop Shot (With Braid Line) ?

Featured Replies

Between a 1000 series to say a 3000 series spinning reel - what size is best for drop shot and bass using 10 lb. braid line ?

I know FC as a main line does better with a larger diameter spool to reduce line twist - is the opposite true for spinning reel spool size and braid as a main line (i.e. smaller spool size with braid is better ) ? ... Thanks in advance for replies !

For light braid you can use about any reel you want and it will cast fine.  As for twisting, I have had braid get twisted a lot and have found that it still performs fine, doesn't loop up like mono or flouro.  I don't know if smaller reels twist the line more than bigger reels.  If I were you I would get a name brand reel with a trusty drag in the 2000-2500 range.  At around $100 you can get some really nice, very smooth operating, reels.  I have found some really good deals on Ebay, and I would also look for sales at Cabelas, BPS, etc.

2500.

Unless you want a larger spool then you go with the 3000.

I have 3 spinning rigs, all of them 2500 size and loaded with braid backed with cheap mono.  Leader is co-poly.

I was thinking the : "Goldie Locks" spinning reel for braid / drop shot would be in that 2000 series / 2500 series size where the predominant size mono listed for the reel is in that 6lb. to 8lb. range . I suppose there are crappie fishermen who even drop down to a 1500 series with light braid and a light rod without excesive braid line issues.

I'd go with a 1000 size, you dont need the extra lung capacity.

I probably should have kept on topic to spool diameter focusing on how the braid comes off the spool for max casting distance without line slap , wind knots - or the "woofer" as KVD describes any line issue where reel , rod and line are not in harmony !

I like Pflueger Trion's or President in the "30" size for all my spinning reel needs for bass fishing. I only go smaller for ice and/or panfish set ups.

1000 (20) or 2500 (25/30) both work well. Since you wont be casting a mile, the 1000 will save weight. But the drag preasure wont be as high as with a 2500, if that matters to you.

Although I was always in the Shimano , Abu Garcia or Daiwa spinning reel camp - upon further review there does not appear to be anything equal to the Pflueger President 25 or 30 series for the price ... Any quirks or issues using braid on the Pflueger Presidents ?

Any size will work just fine, although I wouldn't go over a "30" size.
