How Far Up From The Butt Do U Like To Put Your Spinning Reel

Featured Replies

Sounds like a trick question. ;)

I'm assuming you're talking about rod building, but either way this is how I like to balance my outfits. Are you talking about a Tennessee grip rod?

Place it wherever the reel balances best. I usually like the rod to balance out about an inch above the reel at the top of the grip, so I place the reel accordingly. If this can't be achieved, I am using the wrong sized reel.

Somewhere between 11" and 13" for mine personally for the center of the reel seat.  That has more to do with the length of my forearm and where the butt hits while fighting fish.

The triggers on the casting rods are between 10 3/4 and 11 1/2 for reference.

In my opinion it is more about ergonomics than balance.  With most blanks, if you balance them perfectly, the distance between the reel and the butt will be so long it gets caught on clothing.  I saw your other post and you probably saw my reply that I had done the same thing.

I suggest you find the optimum dimension for you (or whoever you are building for) and stick very close to that dimension.  On some types of fishing where you don't have the butt pass by your elbow area you can, if you want, go longer.  Like for salmon rods or heavy duty rods like musky rods, for example.  For most of my rods I don't worry at all about balance, I just build as light as I can and don't worry about it.  They work fine.  I do not like the feel of weight added to the butt to try to balance.  I know a lot of builders have different opinions.

I did not start building yet, probably going to wait until winter, the 2 rods I just got, the butt sticks passed my elbow & the Eva catches my cloths like u said above, looks like I just have to cut butt caps off & reinstall new ones

spinning rods and my baitcasting rods , i have 16'' handles( all split grip) measured from the back of the reel seat , for my swimbait rods , all 18'' handles ,all split grips , measured the same way . all rods have VERY minimal EVA rear grips(1.5'') with tapered EVA butt caps . non have a fore grip and ALL are micro guide rods (including spinning rods)

I was out with a few of my spinning rods today and found that for me 10 1/2inches from the foot of the reel to the butt is what I like.  My arm is 16 5/8 inches from my fingertip to biceps contact.  If that dimension were 12 1/2 inches from reel foot to butt, the butt would be hanging up on my clothing a lot.  Regardless of rod balance.

Just have to throw it out there, I misread the title of your post originally and busted out laughing at work.....

It depends on whose butt it is and how many more fish they've caught than me.  If it's a lot, I like to jam it ALL the way in!  :  )

I was scrambling to hide the thread when I first read the title. Thankfully I read the first post and realized it was a serious thread and not just someone trolling. I seriously laughed out loud once I realized it. Ratherbfishing's comment got me pretty good too  :laugh5:

You get more leverage the further in it is.
