Tough Circumstance. Need Help Choosing The Right Approach.

Featured Replies

Hey guys I got a question. This coming week I will be in Hayward Wisconsin on Round lake. Fishing reports show huge largemouth and smallies and I want to get one haha. My grandparents live directly on the lake and have a dock that goes about 15 feet into the lake. I can't afford a guide and I am the only going to be fishing and there boat isn't running so I'm stuck fishing around the dock or on the dock. There is a lot of lay downs and tall grass around their land and wanted to know what you would rig up to try and reel one in if you only had a dock to work with.

I have 2 setups if it helps.

First is a Duckett Ghost 7 foot medium action with a Lews tournament mg reel. 5:4:1

Second is a shimano 6 foot 8 worm and jig rod medium heavy action with an okuma cerros 7:3:1

This is probably a stupid question just don't want to come back skunk'd

I'd put braid and a frog on that worm rod and heave away - there are more efficient approaches but frogs are fun and they will draw out the biggest bass - if they don't eat throw a plastic at them.

Don't forget to take along some nightcrawlers.

7' med, 5.4:1; square bills, rouges, spinner baits, wacky rigs

6'8" mh, 7.3:1; t-rigs, jigs, senkos, flukes

Cover the entire water ;)

I was in northern WI last week.  I very much hope you can get in a boat, even if you have to borrow a jon boat and row.  I was an hour east on a very different lake, but had I been in your shoes, it would have been a very long week.  Casting from the dock yielded a couple very short bass and a few bluegills.   On the boat only a couple hundred yards from the dock, we caught 23 in. walleye, good numbers of LMB, couple SMB and had a nice musky follow.  Best of luck to you.  BTW, the bass from the dock were all caught on a ned rig.  'Similar' depth/bottom/vegetation conditions around the lake found bass at weed edges biting senkos, Cut-R's, jigs and frogs (at dusk.)

Dude try to find a kayak or borrow or rent if you can.  Go on craigslist and send a message to someone selling a kayak nearby- ask them if they would be willing to rent it to you for the day/weekend or something.  Can't hurt to try, that's for sure!

That said, your medium rod could work for a smaller finesse look like a Ned, jerkbaits or even cranks while the MH could work well for a nice jig or big shakyhead or even just a fat t-rigged weighted worm.  You didn't list lines but you can make it work for sure with those setups!
