If u have a rod that the butt is about 2-3" longer than u like can u cut it & install a new butt. If so what would be the best way to cut it off

Are you talking about a bare blank or a fully built rod?

Miter saw is what I use.

Finished rod spilt grip, the butt is longer than my other rods, it sticks out past my elbow & I don't like it, wanted to shorten it

I've always used a cutoff wheel in a Dremel.  I wrap the section I want to cut with masking tape and draw a line around the tape where I want the cut to be.

A junior hacksaw does the job perfectly well.

80 tooth. I keep a blade around that I only do rod work with. Cork blocks, blank cutting, reel seat inserts.

I have had trouble getting square, accurate cuts when using hand tools, like a hacksaw.  Also, I believe the carbide tipped blade like the 80 tooth, moved VERY slowly through the blank/rod/cork/reel seat/etc gives the cleanest cut with no chance of pulling out fibers.  I have a "sliding vise" into which I put the work, shimming as required to get square cuts on irregular parts, and slide it through on my table saw using the cross-cut fence (or whatever the crosscut guide is called).

 

I built a rod too long in the butt.  It was a full cork grip design.  When I cut it off, I just cut it off flat then glued on a piece of burl cork with epoxy, sanded it to match, then put epoxy over the top of that ring and up about 3/4 of an inch up the cork handle.  A couple coats of liquid epoxy to get good buidup, hoping to gain some structure from its thickness.  It was done about 10 years ago, I use the rod just about every time out, and it is still structurally sound.

Cut the rod/butt caps off today with hacksaw & tape, ordered 2 new Eva butt caps, winding checks & pro-paste. Cut 2.75" off

Do I need to put a finish over the winding check? Don't have any & no wrapper or dryer stand

No you do not have to. What are you using to dry your rod after finish coat? 3 min hand twist?

It's a finished rod, I already had, just that the butt section was to long, stuck out past my forearm

I use a Dremel tool with the largest size cutoff wheel I cab find. Put the rod in my power wrapper, get it spinning at about 100rpm and slice it right off. You can ream out a new butt cap to slide on over the cut end of the rod, but you will need to build up the blank at the front of the butt cap due to the taper of the blank. A little masking tape will do the trick, or even a wrap of thread if the taper is shallow.

What do I use to ream the butt cap, I ordered the .500 Eva cap the rod is .527

I use Batson Dream Reamers. Well worth the money if you're going to do this a lot. Not worth it for a one time task. For a one time thing get a piece of 5/8" dowel, chuck it in a drill and sand it down to to size you want. Use some wood workers glue and glue on some grit.. Might do what you need, on the cheap.

Cut about 3" off butt, only had a sanding block to shave down butt, cut the butt cap shorter
