Any of you have an environmentally safe and easy way to reduce the weight of a jig?  I know your thinking "buy a smaller one" but the ones I like can only be found in a size that is 1/16th to 1/18th oz too heavy for me.  That and I don't like the small hook sizes that come with smaller jigs.  Any suggestions for how to reduce the amount of lead?   I have thought about filing it down but was unsure of the powdery dust it makes in the process.

use tin.   That will lighten up your jig considerably.

I use wire cutters, followed by a little filing to smooth it out. The chunks are much easier to contain, and I suppose as long as the heads are unpainted you can re use them if you pour your own.

I file mine over a 33 gallon garbage container.

thanks for the tips guys... I may give that a try... not sure how you clip it with wire cutters but I'll give it a whirl!

use gate cutters, if you have them. They cut right through lead easily. I usually cut the lead away from the hooks on jigs I mess up so I can try again.

If  you want to file them, get a respirator with filtration. I bought one rated for asbestos and lead dust at home depot for $25. Sit out on the porch and file away. The dust won't hang around outside.
