Not A Bad Week On Hilton Head Island...

It certainly is advantageous to have parents retired on Hilton Head Island, and having a very reasonable 5-hr drive to get there :)

I didn't get to fish nearly as much as I wanted (but hey, do we EVER get to fish as much as we want?) but I did OK regardless.

The first evening down, I got a few largemouth to play on some of my usuals (pink fluke, Grande Bass Snake'O Stick) lures before two gators chased me off.  I can fool one, but not two.  No big ones, but still fun on light spinning gear.  On that note, I think the Owner weigthed twistlock light hooks may have been invented just for me to fish the ponds of HHI.  But I digress...

Took my customary inshore guided trip with my usual guide.  I think this was trip #23 with him, so yeah, he's good :)  We've done all the usual fishing down here so now we typically swing for the fences.  Unfortunately the wind made it impossible to find the 25-30 lb Jack Crevalle so we went after the tarpon.  Things started well early when we say a tarpon roll through the pod of bait we were netting but that was it for the day.  Mr T. didn't want to come out and play.  But the day was not a total loss as I got to add another species to the list, and it was certainly not one I expected.  It wasn't a monster by any means, but the 6-ft Tiger shark we caught was still friggin' awesome.

A few other days, I hit the tidal creeks at dead low tide and was not disappointed.  A chartereuse Gulf Swimming Mullet did most of the damage on flounder and trout -- two species that I've caught plently of, just never on my own on HHI -- so I was thrilled to have them join the party.  A few of the flounder would have made a nice dinner had I thought ahead to bring the cooler, but oh well....  If only I could have found a redfish, I would have had my first-even inshore slam.

All in all, not a bad week at all!

Wow look at that Tiger!  Awesome!

And remember, Shark Week starts tomorrow on Discovery Channel :D

I'm curious, how close to shore was it caught?
