I would say the same thing goes for me when it comes to confidence.  I figured out years ago that if I have a bait that I can't catch anything on and I see other guys killing it, I go to a pond that has stocked fish that are always bitting.  I pay attention to when the fish hit and how they hit a bait.  If they bite it softly or kill it, gives me a good indication on how I should fish the bait in question moving forward.  Senkos for example, I use to fish them in same manner I would a ribbon tail worm or a fluke but I didn't catch much.  I studied and learned what I could at a local pond, I changed how i fished them in way that worked best for me, then I started catching fish with them consistently and now Senkos are my go to bait.
