Buzzbaits Through The Grass

Recommended Posts

So I have a body of water I fish, and it frequently produces very well with a buzzbait, of course just at dusk.

Lately the pond is getting a very heavy spread of grass cover from the bank out about 15'

Is there a better or feasible way to pull a buzzbait through this without fouling the blade? I've tried my lucky Cavitrons and they foul up something terrible. Even the SK buzzbaits with the weed protective cone in front of the blade doesn't help. Am I just out of luck until the weeds die off in the fall?

I don't know too many buzzbaits that will go cleanly through grass cover, but you can try the Ragetail Shad. It will glide across that stuff while still making a commotion in the water.

Thanks I'll have to give that a shot. I have an inline buzzbait that I've rarely used. I may try adding a weedless hook to it and seeing if that helps any. I doubt it though since it's the blade that gets fouled up

That inline buzzbait is supposed to work better in the weeds.  I've been tempted to get one as of late so let us know if you have any luck with it.

Thats a good technique. I use 5 inch Riverside grubs .

There's a Snag Proof frog with a buzzer that should work.

The buzzbait blades are nothing more than augers. They suck up everything and that's all there is to it. When weedy situations are happening-use a frog-or even a swimbait over it.  Not many people do that

Yea, I've given up on anything but a frog for now.

On a good note, we had a really hard rain Sunday night, which raised the water level a few inches above the grass tops.

Broke out the weightless fluke and buzzbaits last night while testing out the new Gliss line (see another post in Rods, Reels, Line) and had a nice time whackin' em. I love that kind of fishing. Can't beat a nice squeaky Cavitron!

I had one of those little BPS in-line buzzbaits with the bucktail hair skirt and a single hook with a weedguard. I tried it a couple times without a bite. If I had gotten a bite, I wouldn't feel great about my chances because of the weedguard style. I gave it to a kid along with a tackle bag and 3 Plano utility boxes and a bunch of other lures I either never used or have no confidence in. I hope he has luck with it.

I almost hate to divulge this as it is one of my go to baits because nobody else throws it, but try a Norman Weed Walker. It slides over slop like a frog, but has a paddle wheel in the middle that makes a racket like a buzzbait. It casts like a bullet too to get way back where your trolling motor doesn't want to go. Cheap and insanely effective.

The rage shad is by far my favorite in weeds. Scumfrog bigfoot frog and Snag Proof Bass Kicker and Bobby's Perfect Buzz Frog are awesome as well. If you fish the rage shad on braid though, use a moderate action MH crankbait type rod so you don't pull it out of their mouth. The frogs just fish on a regular heavy frog rod.

Frog first for me, but if they want it moving then it's a RI Trixie Shark.
