It all depends on the rods intended use and what's comfortable for you. My bluegill builds have 4" rear grips and surf builds have 18". There is no right answer. That's the beauty of custom.

It's good practice to dry fit everything prior to glue up. This is a good time to see how things feel. If you have a rod you like or wish was a little different use it as a baseline.

I normally set the trigger at about 11".  Find a rod you like, measure it and use it as a guide on your first one.

Roughly where the rod balances. You want the rod (with the reel attached) to balance right where you grip it.

I will build them with a rear grip from 9" to about 12" depending on the technique.  I measure from the butt of the blank to the bottom edge of the reel seat.

you measure from the rearmost part of the reel seat to the butt of the blank , i have all my rod handles long , 16'' for my spinning and casting rods , 18'' for my swimbait rods . the main reason why i first looked into custom rods was that i couldn't find a swimbait rod i liked with a long enough handle , all decent '' swimbait rods '' had short handles that wore you out throwing big baits all day !

plus the additional handle length aids in long casts and tucks under the arm comfortably !!

Handle length has an obvious impact on the feel of the finished rod but there are other factors. Followed strictly, this theory would give like create an awkwardly long grip on a 7'6" or 8' flippin' stick for example.  There is no right or wrong, build what feels good to you.

This is one of the reasons I began building and one reason many anglers will continue to purchase custom rods.  It's all about personal preferences.  You're building the rod to please only one person.  I have two rods with 12in. rear grips. I wouldn't dream of deep cranking all day with anything shorter.

exactly ! i will never buy a stock rod to fish , only way i would buy a store bought rod is for a friend to use as a loaner ( i get way to OCDish when someone even gets near my custom rods !!!)
