Does the rod blank actually go all the way to the butt of the rod?  I was just curious because I ordered an 8ft. Musky rod from Gander Mtn. but the visible blank is only a few inches longer than a St. Croix 7ft. rod that I have.  I think I'm just going to start buying rods with minimal handle so I can see that the blank indeed comes all the way to the butt and is true to the rod length that is labeled on the rod.  Are some rod makers advertising a certain length but part of that length is just cork handle?  That would be messed up.  

usually the blank will extend all the way to the end of a rod, at least with higher priced/quality ones. I imagine some cheap rods may not extend but the good ones should.

Different style rods will have different length grips. Musky rods typically have 30"+/- of grips and reelseat. If you're trying to compare a 7' bass rod and a 8' musky rod, I'd bet there is more lbapn in front of the foregrip on the 7'. Most rods built today are of blank through design.

Yeah, the blank extends to the butt cap.  That doesn't say anything about how long the blank is in front of the handle.

Why do you think the blank stops at the grip?  Did you break the rod?

I was just curious.  The rod didn't break.  However, where the start/top of the cork handle meets the blank, there is a sealant around the girth of the rod.  That could just be for support but for some reason, I started thinking that the rod really didn't extend all the way to the butt because visually, that area looks finished (for the lack of a better way to explain it). 

 

I would take more rod visibility and less handle any day.  I guess I'm just going to have to start fishing those new ABu style rods with the small, minimal foam handles.

I can almost guarantee you that the rod goes through the handle.  The vast majority of rods are made that way.   I wouldn't worry about that.

Rod length is measured from the end of the rod butt to the tip of the rod.

The actual length of the rod blank can vary greatly, not all rods are made the same. Some rod makers use a handle assembly that doesn't have the rod blank extending through it. Some rod handles you can loosen a nut and remove the rod from the the handle, 2 separate sub assemblies.

Most bass rods today have blanks the extend through the handle, the handle components glued onto the rod blank.
