Pick Me A Spinning Rod

Featured Replies

Hey gang, I'm looking for a new spinning rod. Something to drop shot and throw weightless plastics around docks. Not looking for anything over $100. Here are a few that I'm looking at right now. Shimano Clarus, and fenwick HMG. Most likely a 7' fast or xfast. Thoughts on these rods or anything else I should check for sure.

I have a couple of Clarus rods and for the price I wouldn't trade them for something else ( I do have other higher end rods ).

I was planning on buying a St. Croix Rage. Which are on sale for $90. Plus you get a free hat. I've used ugly stiks for ever but I want serving for drop shotting. Hope this helps!

I too have heard good things about the rage rods but really need to put one in my hands.

*** or Dobyns Savvy ML are my choices for your applications. Dobyns will be more than $100 but you will understand why when you fish them. No free hats though.

St Croix rage rods have a love it or hate it grip make sure you hold one before you buy one.

Go with the Duckett series rods and pick the size/action you want. I can work a fluke with mine, and then tie on a drop shot or shakey head and feel everything the weight hits. Great all around rod for lighter lure/weight use!

I just started fishing again. I'm only using one rod/reel for everything right now. I've got a Sedona and a cheap Bass Pro 6/6 MH.

I like the Sedona, but I want to upgrade my rod. I'm willing to spend $100. I was thinking 6/6 M. What should I buy?

I was looking at the Clarus or maybe the St. Croix Premier (which is more $).

Also, thanks for any help.

If you want a rod to do both I would look at a Medium powered fast action rod in the 6'8"-6'10" range. The 7' standard length for a drop shot rod would probably work too but a couple less inches makes a big difference when you start getting into skipping baits into tight quarters around docks and boats. You also need at least the medium power as opposed to the ML a lot of the DS rods have. It takes a little more effort to drive the hook home with those weightless plastics than it does a drop shot.
