I have never been pitching and flipping before but I'm eager to learn and I'm going this week. What are some key things to remember as far as line set up? I will be pitching extremely heavy cover, canes and wood, with a 1/2 oz weight. I have 30lb mono. Will that work?

For my dense cover punching, flipping, and pitching line, I use 65lb PP braid. Depending on the density of the cover I will use 1/2oz up 1.5oz Tungsten weight. As far as mono working? I am sure it will, it was the line of choice back in the day. Presently, there are several line choices that will get the job done a little better imho. I choose braid, because this type of fishing is so up close and personal, I prefer a line that has 0 shock absorption and allows me to remove fish out of cover quickly. Of course the type of rod and reel you are using play an important role in this as well.

Lou wins...... that heavy mono can easily be replaced with something more appropriate that will make learning and having success much easier.

Your set up will work. It will not be optimum though.

That mono will have extreme abrasion resistance, so it's got that going for it, but it will get hung up in the slop.

If that's what ya got. You'll make it work. I only like braid in the green stuff. It tends to dig in wood with heavy weight. Mono will work. I've even used 20 lb with success. Use a heavy rod or at least a medium heavy and set the hook pretty hard and get the fish out as fast as possible. Check the line for Frays frequently.
