I have a little game I play when out on the lake, I can tell what brand a boat is just by listening to it run across the lake. Every brand has a distinct sound it makes in smooth water, chop, & rough water.

Skeeter has a "slap" cause by the water hitting the hull; in smooth water I can hear a Champion "slice" through the water.

I can usually get 8-9 out of 10 correct!

I've done that with motors before, but not the boat itself.

Part of the lake I usually fish is more like a river system and a lot of boats go past me during a day of fishing when I'm in that area.  A couple of times this summer, I heard a boat going by that sounded absolutely perfect (and I'm talking about the hull).  No slap, no flutter, just pure SMOOTH.  And when I heard it and looked, I looked at the wake, spray from the hull, etc., to see why that hull sounded so nice.  In both instances, I didn't look for the brand/model before it was too late to see it!

 

I'll be on the look-out, and playing your "what boat is it" game next season.

Yeah.  And I can also tell what brand of prop and if it is a three blade or four blade.  

Me being pretty much a gear head, I do it with motors. I can pretty much tell you most of the major brand V-6's and a lot of the older mid size and small motors. The lake and area I fish, the big bass boats and the big motors are by far the most popular and those are the ones you see and hear most of the time.

I find it makes a lot of difference if the lake has hard water or soft water in it.  Takes a real purist to make the distinction!

You're tellin me!! When our lakes freeze over hard, my boat sounds completely different on it.
