Hi, I'm in the market for a light action spinning rod about 6'10 ft or less. I want to use it for trout, small bass and the occasional 4-5 lb bass that I might run into. I'm hoping for some suggestions on a good reliable rod that has a strong backbone and not too whippy, despite being a light action rod. Additionally, I will be throwing very light crank baits and weightless plastics from 1/8 oz down. Thanks for any suggestions!

I have a 7' BPS ML Micro Lite spinning rod that I use for bluegill, crappie, and trout.  I have never had any problem with it.  I've never tried catching smallies with it, though.

Check out that Shimano Zodias 6'8 ML spinning rod...I held it in hand at a local retailer and that rod is awesome. It's the first time I've held a spinning rod and said ..."man, I gotta have one of these!" And I will. Check around, you can get one of these cheaper than you think. I would look at st croix 6'6 medium light fantastic blank. I also have a 6'6 light blank waiting for some guides which is very nice as well, it is very "light" in power though. The ml is better in my opinion as an everyday rod.

The Fenwick River Runner gets good reviews.   I personally use the St. Croix Panfish rod for my finesse duties and I could not be happier.

I would highly suggest the St. Croix Avid or even the new Avid X. One of the the best if not the best rod for the money. They are great rods and have a plenty of backbone for the bigger fish. Also has a life time warranty for the Avid series which is a plus!
