Flippin Stick Recommendations.

Featured Replies

I've been using a BPS Extreme Heavy-Fast 7'6" Telescoping for my flipping and hvy pitching needs but I find the rod is pretty heavy to be doing it for any length of time.  Plus I don't really like the action/sensitivity as I can't seem to feel the lighter bites.

Therefore, I'll either re-purpose the rod or just sell it.  I have it paired with a Tatula type R, which I love.

Criteria:

  • I only have 4 slots in my locker that accommodate rods greater than 7'.  As all of my rods are 1pce I would prefer the flippin stick to be extendable/telescopic.
  • Length? I'm fine with the 7'6" but what about longer?  I'm short (5'5") but I like the idea of a longer flippin rod.  As I pitch with this as well (if I'm further from the target) will the longer rod be problematic because of my height?
  • Action? This has got me stumped.. The ST Croix LT flipping/punching rods are all somewhat parabolic.. Medium Fast action.  In my mind, I think I'd prefer a Extra Fast (soft tip) to help with the lite bite?  Looking through different MFGs specs, I've seen 3 types of action offered in a flipping rod, MF/F/XF..  What's your preference and why?
  • Power? I think I want to stick with Heavy, not XH as the bass in ontario are generally under 4lb.

Again, these are just some of my assumptions and looking for the expert advice that I know lurks in this forum :-D.

TIA!

Patrick.

A few rods come to mind, but what is your main type of cover you are flipping and pitching to?  Is it mats, scattered reeds/shoreline cover, docks, timber?  I have 3-5 rods I can flip pitch with depending on what the presentation(bait type), cover and or structure I'm fishing.

Most of my flipping is on shoreline cover (long point bay, lake erie).  Once and a while I'll try docks but mostly grass, brush, and logs along the shore. I'd also like to use the rod for pitching football jigs into deeper weed puffs, say around 15' deep.  These weeds can be pretty dense so I'd like something I can pull them out of w/o much trouble.

So far my BPS extreme does an ok job I just want something lighter and more sensitive.  I'll just re-purpose or sell the extreme..

I don't know how you feel about micro guides, but the Falcon Bucoo 7'3"H is a nice rod, they also have a 7'6" in the micro...unfortunately no standard.  I use the 7'3" now for frog fishing as it has plenty of power, but have used it for flipping/pitching semi-heavy grass and it has plenty of pull power to move fish, light, and sensitive.

the only rods i can think of that might fit your bill is the megabass destroyer orochi X7...either the seven-eleven or the black python (i have the seven-eleven). both are rated 'extra heavy' but i think that's skewed for the japanese market...in the US, it feels more like a finesse flipping stick. although i love the rod, i am not really a fan of the telescopic feature as it makes taking it out of the rod locker a little awkward. in addition to the seven-eleven, i also have the 7'9" megabass orochi X4 flipping special and a daiwa zillion 7'6" flipping stick (for me, they all have their place).

regarding length, i'm 5'8" and i find that longer is better for flipping but shorter is better for pitching (i can get a faster pendulum motion without my rod tip hitting the water). everyone is different so it's best for you to experiment and see what works best for you.

my rule of thumb regarding action of flipping sticks is, the more powerful the rod, the slower the action i want and vice-versa. typically, the closer into cover i get, the more powerful stick i want and if i get a hot fish close to the boat, i want the rod to bend down the blank a lot more to keep her pinned. if the cover is not as thick, i can be further out with a less-powerful stick but i'll want a faster tip for better sensitivity and quicker hooksets.

i'd actually recommend you settle on the flipping stick you want and not worry about pitching with it. after all, you can pitch with any rod.

Falcon Cara Amistad.... 7'3'' Heavy action with a medium fast tip.  Plenty of power for any bass.

To the OP.........................Are you against having a rod custom built?  There are many telescoping blanks available if you want to go the custom route. I have seen the "light" this year on custom vs. off the shelf stuff. It's not as expensive as you would think, and you can get EXACTLY what you want.
