What Is A Good Shallow Cranking Combo? Can I Also Use It For Jerkbaits?

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a shallow cranking rod (squarebills and lippless) that is a good quality. I am also curious about what line to put on it.

What is your price range.  To answer your question, I would say the rods are interchangeable.

I use 12# Seaguar InvizX, but a lot of people will tell you go to 15# test.  Any quality 6'8" - 7' moderate action action rod works.  I throw a Duckett Ghost medium action and it does just fine for me.

reel and gear ratio?

reel and gear ratio?

Find a reel that picks up 26-28 IPT.  Gear ratio's vary depending on the reel.  That's a better idea of what to look for.

I use a Dobyns Champion 684CB. Line is usually 12-15lb. Fluoro for squarebills and lipless baits. Sometimes I'll use 40lb. braid if there's lots of pike or heavy weeds to rip through. For jerkbaits, I'll downsize to 10-12lb. Fluoro.

I like slow ratios for all resistance baits and will also drop down to 10# fluoro for suspending jerkbaits.

I use a Megabass Orochi XX Flatside special with a Shimano Metanium 6.2 reel. Seaguar invizx 12lb fluoro.

You can definitely use them interchangeably but, ideally you would want a faster action for the Jerkbait rod and a more moderate action for the Crankbait rod. A medium or medium heavy should be just fine for the power. Keep in mind that is "ideally". You should be just fine pulling double duty. Now a worm rod and a Crankbait  rod, that’s a whole other can of worms...

You can use it, but it may not perform ideally for jerkbaits. I prefer an XF action for jerks.

I use a 705cb glass dobyns champion I feel it's pretty versatile id prefer shorter for jerkbaits but I think it would work. As for the reel I have a Lews bb1 pro loaded with 15 lb pline co polymer

The okuma 7' M+/MF Helios tcs might be up your alley. It's a crankbait/jerkbait rod. Plus you can find good deals on them, $159 retail but you can find them for $100.

Edit: Actually the 6'9 MH/MF Helios tcs is what I use for all of these. It has a soft tip for the treble hooks but sturdy enough to rip traps And jerkbaits.

Same here, and my jerkbait rods also pull double duty for weightless soft plastics.

I use a Denali kovert 6'10 cranking Rod. It depends on what I'm doing as far as the rest of my set up goes, but more than often I'm using an stx 6.4:1 with 15 lb test or higher. I'll go faster ratios with traps. I'll go lighter line with jerk baits. As low as 8 lb test.
