jig tying

Featured Replies

So I think I might be interested in tying my own jigs.  Can anyone give me the run down on any tools I might need?  Maybe a website where the tools and materials can be purchased?  And last, is this more or less expensive to do than to just buy jigs already made?  Thanks in advance!!

It doesnt take much to start tying your own jigs.  Get a cheap vice for like 15-20 bucks, some thread, a few jig heads and of course the skirts.  If you go through jigs a lot of jigs in the long run you will probably be cheaper tying your own jigs.  If not, no worries, you have something to do at night and can make your own custom colors.

Here is a vice from BPS

Some people use thread to tie, if thats the case a fly tying bobbin will be nice.  I use both thread and wire and lately prefer wire....your choice

Camman pretty much covered the basics on where to buy stuff. I hand tie with thread, however that is a personal choice. If you want PM me and I can give you some info on making knots on your finished thread wraps.

If you want to get in cheaply and have any kind of vice, I suggest wire tying.  To string tie you will need thread, bobbin, vice, and large whip.  To wire tie you need any kind of vice wire and a couple of pairs of pliers.
