Broken Skeg

Featured Replies

I lost about 3 " off of my 90 hp 2 stroke Mercury this past summer and would like some ideas/recommendations on skeg replacement.  Was wondering how those stainless steel skeg guards work out? Seems like an easy fix compared to welding but want some input before I purchase one.  I even see that they have a plastic composite skeg replacement???

A good welder can fix it in a few minutes.  You won't even notice it was broken.

I'd just get a new one welded on. It's not a tough fix. Have them weld it and clean it up and then take a rattle can to it. I'll be good as new.

It's not easy to weld die cast aluminum alloys, if the prop hub housing/skag is investment cast alloy, then it can be welded.

Google this... my buddy has had one on his 115 Opti for 5 years..

SkegShield Skeg Guard

I'm a big fan of the skeg guards. Had one on my champion for the last couple years. They break away easier than a typical skeg, but I always figured the cost of one or two of those per year was better than a new lower unit.
