Ok I own 3 mojo's now and I love the handles, I know I have seen someone (I think here) make a full cork handle into a split grip. I know better than to start with my avids , so I got a lightning rod and an old abu to practice with. A lil help would greatly be appreciated! I dont even know what type of epoxy I would need to finish the blank. I know there is probably other posts about this but I searched DIY split grips and did'nt get much. Also, does anyone think this would void the warranty on my avids? Thanks!

well, I now have a 7' allstar, a lightning rod and a couple of abu rods that are gonna get custom handles! I dont think I better touch my avids! I will let you guys know how they turn out.

If you Modify the rod by splitting the grip you are still eligible to use the Gold Star Warranty program. Even if the modifications are at fault of the rod breakage.

And if the rod breaks nowhere near your modifications, I'd bet it would still be covered by the original warrantee.  I have had similiar discussions with St Croix rep, but not specific to a split grip mod.  If you are worried, call and discuss it with them.

Spring Break starts tomorrow and I'm gonna do my Lightning Rod as well. I'm also gonna take a few inches off. Thanks for the idea!

I will say, if you use a knife or razor, make sure it is sharp and keep all your fingers clear of the front of the knife.  Dull tools will slip more and require more force, increasing the chance of cutting yourself.  I have a nasty cut of my finger because of this, so just take your time.

Hey guys just wondering if lacquer will work on the thread after wrapping.  I couldnt find any epoxy finish @ the local hardware store.  btw my rods look great one lime green and another burgandy to match the rod.  They are awesome.

i have completely removed all the cork from my first generation allstar rods and replace then with split grip eva...its awsome to not have to pay 300.00 for a rod that i modified in my shop for about 10.00 worth of material

Thanks for posting this. I wish I knew about it a couple of years ago. I would have never known about using a heat gun to remove the old epoxy. I would have thought that you would damage the rod blank. I also like the idea of cutting the threads on the reel seat down.
