Real seat input needed

Featured Replies

So Im building a rod and im stuck on how to do the real seat.  I originally didnt wont a foregrip because I wanted to be able to place my finger on the shaft.  When putting it together it just doesnt look right.  Do you guys have any suggestions??  Should I just do a fore grip? Thanks

There are trim rings made to fit the front of the real seat, dress it up a little and give a sort of transition.  Another way is to put an epoxy ramp, quite short, but it can make a pleasing transition while retaining the sensitivity you want.  Another way is to turn a small ramp out of reel seat shims (foam polyurethane, sometimes called graphite), sized to allow two-three coats of thread wrap epoxy to give adequate crush strength. The epoxy will take the diameter of the shim to be equal to the seat, or just a little smaller.  Don't make it larger than the seat because it will be very difficult to cover properly with epoxy without contaminating the threads of the seat.  If you need more info let me know.   Be sure to fully coat the blank to ensure 100% contact with the shim bore.  Shim may be painted before installation.

You need to trim the excess threads off so none are exposed when the reel is locked down.

It's not hard.  Screw the hood til it almost completely covers the threads, maybe within 1/8" or so.  Mark the threaded  barrel in front of the locking nut.  That will be where you will cut.  Remove the nut/hood from the threads.  Put a wrap of tape around the threads where you placed the mark.  This will give you a guide to follow.  Cut with a dremel and cutoff wheel or hacksaw.  My preferred method is spinning it on a lathe and cutting with a parting tool.

Now when you glue that part of the seat to the blank, make sure its where it needs to be to fit the reel.

I think it turned out pretty good.  I believe I will get some aluminium winding checks next time though.

I knew I had a pic of one of those seats trimmed down somewhere.  You probably could have taken a bit more of the threads off.

I see what you mean... Space the barrel a little further.
