What differentiates the two, if there is a difference?

The most basic difference is a lack of casting brakes on a conventional reel. These are generally used for trolling and vertical jigging for saltwater applications.

Huh.  I always thought a conventional didn't have a level wind.  This is based in nothing I've ever read; just sorta' assumed.  Dangit.
