Crankbait bills

Featured Replies

I don't know about your question, but it's easy to make your own bills out of lexan.  You just trace the pattern on the lexan, rough-cut it with tin snips, and then file or sand to final shape.  This way you can make any size and shape of bill you want, and it's cheaper than buying prefabricated bills.  I get my lexan from usplastic.com.

Barlow's and lurepartsonline are two other places.   I'll take the pre-fab bills over making my own any day.   That part adds 30 min to my build time.

Marty, are we in a hurry?

Yeah, I know .... baits to make, orders to fill. ;)  I do them like Whittler does.  I make baits as a hobby and do different designs, so stocking up on a bunch of lips just doesn't make sense in that scenario.  I just keep some sheets of Lexan and circuitboard on hand and roll my own.  It takes me about 30 mins to whip up a batch of 5-6 lips.  I also make my own screw eyes.  Never run out of lips, never run out of the right screw eyes.

How do you make your own screw eyes?

Find a nail the size of eyelet you want and place it in a vise point up. Next get some wire 24guage (I will have to check when I get home?) bend it in a "U" shape. Clamp the ends to a set of aircraft wire pliers or in the end of a drill. Slip the U part over the nail and tighten the wire. The spinning of the pliers or the drill will wrap the wire creating a eyescrew.

I like making my own bills, and I basically have to because that's the only way I can get some of the shapes I need.  For example, I use bent lexan bills on some of my lures, and making the bills by hand is the only way I can get them.

@ Indiana Bass1, here's a step-by-step tutorial with pics: Twisted Wire Hinge Tutorial

Note: I use vise-grips instead of a drill for twisting the wire.  It works just as well, and it actually doesn't take as long.

Pictures work so much better than what I typed.
