What kind of boats?

Featured Replies

Can people use any kind of boat in a tournament?  How about a John Boat with a 15hp Johnson?  Or a John Boat with a trolling motor?  A center console?  I mean, all I see are bass boats in the local tournaments. I wonder if a guy with a little ten foot JB with a TM stayed in a couple spots all day and kept a winning limit in hot homemade live well. Do different tourneys have different power rules on boats and design?  Or is it primarily whatever sacked floats you can enter?

Some clubs have HP and length restrictions. All clubs require an operating livewell. They also require insurance but many are lax on enforcement.

Some won't allow a boat with tiller either. It's best if you just check the club/tournament rules to see what's allowed or not. If you have any doubts contact the tounament director and ask him.

I fished local weeknight tournaments out of a 15' johnboat with a 15hp tiller drive and no working livewell. It was a catch and release format similar to MLF. Before that it was a 16' Lowe Roughneck with a 60hp.

Just depends on the tournament. Most jackpot style ones you can fish in anything. I've seen scamps to pontoons. Just check tournament regs.
