Each year I pick a different bait to try, this year I picked up some Duo Realis 90 spybaits. Been reading up on them and watching some video's, a lot say to keep line on the light side around 6 to 8 pound. But the 90 is 1/2oz and there is some information noting you can move to baitcast gear with 12lb test. Does anyone have any experience with the 90 and tried different test line?

Light line is a MUST.

 

I fish the 80's on baitcasting gear and 10 lb flouro with a loop knot.  It's not something I throw all the time, but I've put fish in the boat with it.  I can control the depth/speed much better with casting gear.  I'm not an expert at the technique, but I've caught more fish since switching to casting gear than I did when I used spinning with 6 lb line.  Action appears identical to my eyes, loop knot seems to help a great deal.

I think the 90's will be fine on casting gear.  

I use 8# flouro with the 90. I might could get away with 10# but I like the results I get with 8#. I prefer spinning gear mainly because I like the drag system on spinning reels much better which I found to be critical.

You sir, are brave. LOL! Yozuri is some strong stuff though.

The line is rated 8.5 lb breaking strength, but when you hang up long-lining on the Tennessee River you have to spend some time getting behind the lure or it's toast! I have had a few GREAT smallmouth days using this lure, but frankly, I am not sure it's the best choice around here. Although it is very productive, it's a pain to fish. I prefer a tube or a jig that I do not have to retrieve if it gets hung.
