Which Lews reel for jerkbaits?

Featured Replies

Hi, guys, looking for a reel for my jerkbait rod.  Its a medium power fast action rod, and most of the jerkbaits I will be throwing will be around 3/8 oz, and most likely mono or fluoro 10-12lb test.  Im really wanting to try a new Lews reel, I have heard a lot of good things about them and have handled a couple, and they seem very nice.  Im hoping to get one around the $200 range, the ones that have caught my eye are BB1 pro and Tournament pro g.  Would anyone recommend these for jerkbaits, and what ratio, 6.4:1 or a faster 7.1:1 or 7.5:1?  Or other Lews reel I should consider?   Lots of choices from Lews for sure!!   Thanks a lot,  --- Jonny

The tournament pro g looks real nice and is right at your price point. I use a 6.8:1 tournament speed spool (28IPT) for my jerkbaits and it hasn't failed me yet.

Happy hunting!

Any reel you want will work fine. Pick one that offers the things you are looking for in a reel. Weight, cosmetics, handle length, line capacity, gear ratio ect ect.   Jerkbaits are a slack line technique and most prefer a faster ratio that can pick up the line quickly.

I use a Tournament MB for jerkbaits and I really, really like it. The dual brake system is a great feature and it is smooth as silk.

I would go the BB1

I just did some research on that and made my purchase a few days ago. I decided on the TPro G, as it is great at casting lighter lures and has high quality components. I was debating on getting the Tournament Lite. It's a little lighter, so I'd be less fatigued by the end of the day. But I don't think it would be worth the decrease in quality components.

I also just ordered a tournament pro g. I'm curious how well I will like it. It's my first reel that's not a Shimano or daiwa.

I got the bb1 pro last year which is similar to the pro g minus line capacity and won't buy a different brand now. By far the best reel I own. Bought the old tournament pro on sale this year paid only 50 bucks for it after gift cards can't wait to try that one too :)
