Nothing is fool proof, and the OP was referring to skimming which the chip will stop. Anything to make it harder to duplicate will help. No they don't work on online orders but you must have captured the account to make that happen.

Another option, is phone/watch pay apps like Samsung Pay. Nothing to swipe.

I don't think it was stolen online, and you are correct. I want a chip card for this reason. And, of a retailer does not have a chip machine, it is now on them (they are at fault) to replace the funds if a card is tracked to be skimmed there. I don't see why Forum has not expedited getting it's members chip cards.

Sorry to hear that!

I got got my card stolen on vacation once while I was out in Utah.  F'ers cleaned me out of like $2k and then of course I had no money whatsoever, and no way to access my savings either!  That was a really rough couple days out there lemme tell ya.

Wow, that sounds like an interesting experience. Not one I'd like to have. Glad I found mine quickly (I have emails setup for all transactions over $10) and am on the road to getting it fixed now.

I don't think a vendor is at fault for anything if they don't use a chip machine, it would still fall on the card issuer which even with debit cards is usually master card or visa.  I could be wrong though as i haven't read any new addendum to the regs in the past few months.

I personally hate using chip cards as it seems like the process is still far from perfect.  About every 3rd time i use one, I have to retry it and for PIN based transactions, i still have to use the chip.  Seems like a waste of time to me at that point as i have already used my PIN and you can't really get more secure than that except if you went with a fingerprint or something.

I have had a visa card that info was stolen and it took me all of about 5 minutes on the phone to dispute the transactions and the money was back in my account within a couple days and my new card was within 5.  I use credit cards 90% of the time for the rewards and just pay them off every month anyways so if one is compromised, i just use a different card.

I am not sold that chip systems are any more secure right now.  I mean yeah, if they use a blank then the chip activated card would be a deterrent, assuming the vendors have a chip machine but it wouldn't prevent online based transactions at all.

All of the disputes are handled pretty much the same and fall under the same regs whether it is credit or debit card or even ACH. There are a few nuances but no need to bore you with those details.....Generally if you are legit and make the claim in the timeframe you will get your money back quickly.

privacy.com My good friend. Safest way to shop online. My brother in law and his business partners created it.

Nope, liability is on the retailer if they do not have the proper chip reader.

"

.Q: Isn’t fraud the bank’s problem?

A: As of October 1, 2015, if an EMV debit card is used at a POS terminal that does not support EMV and a fraudulent transaction occurs due to a counterfeit card being used the liability shifts to the merchant. If the fraud occurs after the merchant upgrades to EMV-compliant equipment the issuer (bank) takes liability."

One of the reasons that I still like to use cash.

Get cash stolen, its gone. This is an inconvenience but you get your money back.

When traveling I pay cash for gas.Had my card nipped twice on the road.

My son is not one to mess with computer wise. His wife`s card was physically stolen. So he started tracking purchases made on the card by the minute. He would call the store  and ask them to review and hold the camara pictures while contacting the local police. After three times they caught up with the thief. I don`t know the outcome. Hopefully he got to be  bubba`s "person of interest"

Yeah, that's the easiest way to make sure that you are not getting stolen from. I have an automatic notifications sent to my phone everytime my card makes a purchase for $10 or more.

Keep an eye out for $1 gas purchases, a widely used method for these criminals to verify they have a valid card before going to a store.

My neighbor got a notice thanking her for  a purchase of an $800 IPhone and that the payment was by Paypal.. The notice had a note to check this link for questions, she didn`t do that.

Funny thing, she made no purchase and has no PP account. The barrage never stops.

Just had to deal with this again yesterday.  Noticed 3 charges for the exact amount of $63.59 each on my bank account.  All came from Microsoft X-BOX.  Had to call the bank and cancel the card, call Microsoft X-Box and try to resolve.  Ended up just going with the bank to dispute the changes because X-box said they couldn't do anything about it because I don't have an account with them and they couldn't reverse the charges.  I don't even own an X-box nor do my kids.  X-box could search by my card number, but could not find it attached to any account so they told me to just dispute it  Would have liked to know who had my info and where they were from....but no luck.  I had to report it to the detective working my fraud case so maybe he can get further than I did with them.  Should be an IP address attached to the purchase.

I love cash, but when there are items that I can only purchase online for both my personal and business use that makes it a bit of a problem.  I am checking into the virtual card route, but some of the daily or monthly limits will cause problems.  I am also looking at a reloadable Visa card that I use only for those transactions and can transfer right from my bank.  It is going to make bookkeeping a little more work for the office.
