Ghostshad, 20oz minimum would be my recommendation as the heavier grade will be more comfortable to fish on, wear better and last longer.  I just had my boat redone with 24oz carpet and it is a noticeable difference over the old rug.   And congratulations on your retirement!  Good fishing, JB

In the process of doing this myself. Not so bad so far as all my carpet came off without tearing apart. So should be easy to use them as patterns for the new carpet. Carpet was ordered from Bassboatseats.com and got the 20oz. Toughest part is getting the old glue and carpet backing off the deck and lids. What I was using was a scraper with Goof off. Works ok. What I remembered after I did the back end of the boat was my dad has a Craftsman cordless multi tool with a scraper. BEST TOOL FOR THE JOB!!! Made the rest of the glue removal job so much easier.  First pic is the back that I did with the hand scraper and started on the second pic when the hamster got on the wheel and I remembered the multi tool. Last two pics are the finished.

Any questions please ask.

the hardest part is getting the old carpet off amd cleaning all the glue.

laying the carpet is fairly simple if your a do it yourself kinda guy

go to youtube. lots of good videos on it

best way to remove glue is go to lowes and get this stuff called "jasco paint remover " in a can or in a gallon.  get an oscilatting rotary tool from harbor freight or wherever and get the scraper blade attachment (which is also really good for removing carpet to ) spray glue, use scraper , comes right up with supreme ease.

Should you decide to tackle this project, remember, carpet has a "grain".  You need to orient all the pieces accordingly.  If you lay the carpet on your hatches one way, and then a different way on the deck that is around them, it will be obvious.

Look at golf courses where they mow the fairways back and forth.  It creates a pattern that is fine on a golf course, but not something that you'd want to see on the deck of your boat.

Citristrip works good I've used it years ago for stripping paint off furniture and ended up using it  to get the glue off the boat when the time came. Goo gone/goof off for other harder to reach spots when you cant scrape

don't scrimp on the carpet or the glue used, makes a big difference. the key is proper prep. not a hard job take your time it will look great.

If I replaced the carpet in my boat I would use a vinyl product for the floor around the console area and maybe even the decks.  Easy to clean just rinse off and your done.  I had a boat that I replaced the wood floor and put new black carpet because I thought it looked good. Big mistake black carpet got really hot in the summer sun!

I did my carpet a few years ago and I used a grinder with a wire wheel to get the glue off the aluminum deck. The wood deck didn't have any glue. This was a tracker and I had to take the whole boat apart to do the job right. Dissaseming compartments, drilling out rivets, trying to remember where a million different screes went.  I would never do it again. I have a newer tracker now and when it needs carpet I'm getting rid of it. Not sure about other boats but this was my experience.

i have a question about this process. What for glue would you use to put the new carpet down on fiberglass?

Trent, I ordered a glue from Homedepot up here. It is Henry's 263 weather pro outdoor carpet glue. You may be able to find it local in your area.
