Early first melt fish

Featured Replies

Hey guys i live in michigan and it looks like next week it might get into the sixtys and probably melt all this miserable ice. My question to you is in water this cold after the first melt ahere do you target the bass at? Shallows, deep, ledges? And what bait would you recommend? This will be first tome ever trying to target largemouth in water this cold. So any input would be greatly appreciated. As always have fun and good luck rippin lips this year fellas!!

Will you be fishing from a boat or the bank? Is your water deep or shallow?

While the air might hit 60 degrees, the water will be in the low 40s most likely, maybe in the 30s. So think about where the fish are, they will not be active and will be in their winter places, so find the remaining structure/weeds and concentrate there. Most will say use jerk baits and fish it slow. FYI I'm not comfortable giving out advice. Others will hopefully offer up more.

I will be in a boat the lake has some deep holes in it some down to 60 ft. I was thinking jerkbait as well just dont know where they will be hangin out

Blade baits , jigs with chunk trailers, jerk baits worked super slow , start at any structure you can find on the break and work in , if you have wind and color in the water you will be surprised how shallow you can find them . In this situation I like a black hair jig or maribu jig , fish it super slow and bass will kill it on the fall.  Look at the break lines that lead to shallow bays on the north side of the lake that are protected from the north winds . Start deep and work in shallow.

A deep diving jerkbait, Ned rig, and blade bait should be all you need.
